Adenosine triphosphate, commonly abbreviated ATP, is the molecule that carries usable chemical energy within a living cell, built from the base adenine, the sugar ribose and a chain of three phosphate groups. A cell releases energy for its work, muscle contraction, nerve signaling, and the biosynthesis anabolism carries out, by breaking the bond to ATP's outermost phosphate group, leaving adenosine diphosphate; that bond is restored using energy captured from catabolism, closing a cycle a human body runs through roughly its own body weight in ATP each day. Karl Lohmann identified ATP in muscle tissue in 1929, and Fritz Lipmann proposed its role as the cell's central energy carrier in 1941.
