A grain boundary is the interface where two crystals of the same material meet with different orientations, the microscopic seam Henry Clifton Sorby first made visible by etching and polishing steel under a microscope in 1864. Grain boundaries interrupt a material's crystal lattice, and controlling their number, arrangement and chemistry, through alloying and heat treatment, is one of the central levers materials science uses to set a metal's strength and toughness.
