Microbiology is the study of microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, and fungi, and of the roles they play in health, disease, and the environment.

Facts
Founded Year
1676 1
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek's 1676 observation of bacteria and other microorganisms through his own hand-ground microscope lenses is the field's founding moment, though the modern discipline of experimental microbiology is usually dated to Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch's germ-theory work nearly two centuries later.
Central Question
What roles do the vast majority of microbial species that have never been cultured in a laboratory play in the environments and organisms they inhabit, given how little of microbial diversity classical culturing methods can reach? 2
Scope
Microbiology is the study of microscopic organisms, bacteria, archaea, fungi, protists and viruses, examining their structure, function, classification and effects on other living things. 2
Significance
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch cloth merchant who ground his own lenses, was the first person to observe and describe single-celled organisms through a microscope in the 1670s, earning him recognition as the father of microbiology roughly two centuries before germ theory was established. 2

The Dutch scientist and entrepreneur Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) was the first to discover and describe microorganisms (protists, bacteria), living beings he characterized as "animalcules" (little animals). Using single-lensed microscopes created for his own, private research, he was able to see and draw microbes for the first time in the history of biomedical sciences.
