The Academie des Sciences is the French academy of sciences, founded in Paris in 1666 at the urging of Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Louis XIV's minister of finance, to bring the kingdom's leading natural philosophers together under royal patronage. It met privately at first and was reorganised with formal statutes in 1699. Alongside the Royal Society in London, it was one of the two institutions that gave the scientific societies of the seventeenth century their lasting, organised form, publishing findings, corresponding across national lines, and judging priority disputes between rival claimants.
