The American Anthropological Association was founded in 1902 as the principal professional association for anthropologists in the United States, bringing together the discipline's traditional subfields of cultural, biological, archaeological and linguistic anthropology. Franz Boas was among its founding members, and Margaret Mead served as its president in 1960. It remains the largest organization of its kind in the world, publishing the American Anthropologist and setting the discipline's professional and ethical standards.
