The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world's largest general scientific society, founded on 20 September 1848 in Philadelphia as a reorganization of the Association of American Geologists and Naturalists, with the meteorologist William Charles Redfield serving as its first president. It publishes the journal Science, one of the world's leading peer-reviewed scientific journals, and is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
