Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory traces to 1890, when the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences opened a Biological Laboratory on Long Island as a summer school for biology teachers and students. In 1904 the Carnegie Institution of Washington established its Station for Experimental Evolution on the same site, later renamed its Department of Genetics, where Alfred Hershey and Martha Chase carried out their 1952 blender experiment. The Carnegie department merged with the Biological Laboratory in 1962 under the laboratory's present name.
