King's College London was founded in 1829 by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington, then serving as prime minister, as one of the two founding colleges of the University of London. Its Medical Research Council Biophysics Unit, formed after the Second World War, was the site of Maurice Wilkins's and Rosalind Franklin's X-ray diffraction studies of DNA in the early 1950s, work that fed directly into the discovery of the double helix.
