The Lasker Award was created in 1945 by Albert Lasker and Mary Woodard Lasker. It is given every year to the living person or people considered to have made the greatest contribution to medical science, or who have demonstrated public service on behalf of medicine, administered by the Lasker Foundation and sometimes referred to as America's Nobels. The award is given in several branches of medical science, including the Albert Lasker Basic Medical Research Award and the Lasker DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award. Eighty six Lasker laureates have gone on to receive the Nobel Prize.
