The London Mathematical Society, the United Kingdom's learned society for mathematics, held its inaugural meeting on 16 January 1865 with Augustus De Morgan chairing, following discussions between Arthur Cowper Ranyard and George Campbell De Morgan. It states its purpose as the advancement, dissemination and promotion of mathematical knowledge, both nationally and internationally, and pursues it through research and conference grants, training and workshops for early career researchers, prizes recognizing mathematical achievement, ten peer-reviewed journals including the Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society running continuously since its founding year and two book series, and by representing mathematics to government policymakers. It was granted a royal charter in 1965, a century after its founding, and its offices are at De Morgan House, Russell Square, in central London.
