Los Alamos National Laboratory was established in 1943 as the Manhattan Engineer District's secret weapons laboratory, under scientific director J. Robert Oppenheimer, to design and build the first nuclear weapons. Cyril Stanley Smith led its metallurgical work, and the laboratory's practical, structure-driven approach to an entirely unfamiliar metal, plutonium, was part of what led Smith afterward to argue for materials science as a field defined by structure rather than by any one class of material.
