NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, is the civilian space agency of the United States. It was created in 1958 by the National Aeronautics and Space Act, signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in response to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik the previous year, absorbing the older National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics rather than starting from nothing. It has no single founder in the way a person founds a laboratory; it is a creature of that Act of Congress. It has run the crewed Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programmes, the Voyager and Mars rover missions, and the Hubble and James Webb space telescopes.
