The National Science Foundation is an independent agency of the United States federal government that funds basic research and education across nearly every field of science and engineering, medicine excepted. It was established on 10 May 1950 when President Harry S. Truman signed the National Science Foundation Act into law, and it is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia.
