SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, originally the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory operated by Stanford University in Menlo Park, California. Its two-mile linear accelerator, completed in 1966, was used in 1968 deep inelastic electron-proton scattering experiments that provided the first direct experimental evidence for quarks, confirming the model Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig had proposed theoretically four years earlier.
