British chemist who, with Anthony T. James, developed gas-liquid partition chromatography, presenting it to the Biochemical Society in October 1950 and publishing it in 1952. The technique grew out of the partition chromatography Martin had developed earlier in the 1940s with Richard Synge, for which the two shared the 1952 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
