Arnold Beckman was an American chemist and inventor who built the first practical pH meter in 1934 to help a citrus industry colleague measure the acidity of lemon juice, then founded the instrument company that became Beckman Instruments. His company's DU spectrophotometer, introduced in 1941, made accurate ultraviolet-visible light measurement a routine laboratory procedure and became the standard instrument of its kind for decades.
