Charles-Augustin de Coulomb (1736-1806) was a French officer, engineer and physicist, best known as the eponymous discoverer of Coulomb's law, the inverse-square law governing the force between electric charges. He established the law using a torsion balance of his own invention, which he built in 1777 to measure very weak electrostatic and magnetic forces from the twist it produced in a suspended fiber.
