Charles-Augustin de Coulomb (1736-1806) was a French officer, engineer and physicist, best known as the eponymous discoverer of Coulomb's law, the inverse-square law governing the force between electric charges. He established the law using a torsion balance of his own invention, which he built in 1777 to measure very weak electrostatic and magnetic forces from the twist it produced in a suspended fiber.

The torsion balance, also called torsion pendulum, is a scientific apparatus for measuring very weak forces, usually credited to Charles-Augustin de Coulomb, who invented it in 1777, but independently invented by John Michell sometime before 1783.
