Enrico Fermi was an Italian-American physicist renowned as the creator of the world's first artificial nuclear reactor. He led the team that achieved the first controlled, self-sustaining nuclear chain reaction at Chicago Pile-1 on 2 December 1942, and made foundational contributions across both theoretical and experimental physics. Numerous awards, institutions and concepts are named after him, including the Fermi paradox.
