Ernst Haeckel was born on 16 February 1834 in Potsdam, Prussia, and died on 9 August 1919 in Jena, Germany. A zoologist and outspoken popularizer of Darwinian evolution, he coined dozens of biological terms still in use, among them phylum and stem cell. In his two volume 1866 work Generelle Morphologie der Organismen, he named a new science Oecologie, defining it as the comprehensive study of the relationships of an organism to its surrounding organic and inorganic environment, the term from which ecology descends.
