British chemist and physicist who worked as J.J. Thomson's assistant before refining Thomson's positive ray apparatus into the modern mass spectrograph, reported in 1919, with far better resolving power achieved by focusing ions of the same mass regardless of their velocity. He used it to identify 212 naturally occurring isotopes and formulated the whole number rule, receiving the 1922 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the work.
