American radio engineer who, inspired by Karl Jansky's 1933 discovery of cosmic radio noise, built a 9-meter parabolic-dish radio telescope in his backyard in Wheaton, Illinois, in 1937, the first purpose-built radio telescope. He conducted the first systematic sky surveys at radio wavelengths through the early 1940s, producing the first radio maps of the sky, and for several years was the only active radio astronomer in the world.
