Josephus Nicolaus Laurenti was an Austrian naturalist whose 1768 Specimen Medicum, Exhibens Synopsin Reptilium Emendatam cum Experimentis circa Venena coined the term herpetology and established the class Reptilia, defining thirty genera against the ten Carl Linnaeus had recognized a decade earlier. The book also carried one of the first published Western descriptions of the cave dwelling olm, Proteus anguinus.
