Ludwig Boltzmann (1844 to 1906) was an Austrian physicist who founded the branch of physics known as statistical mechanics. In the 1870s he showed that the second law of thermodynamics could be derived from the mechanics of atoms treated statistically, giving entropy a microscopic, probabilistic meaning now known as the Boltzmann entropy formula.

Boltzmann's specific contribution is the statistical formulation of entropy (the Boltzmann entropy formula), distinct from Clausius's original 1865 thermodynamic definition of the term.

Boltzmann derived the distribution rigorously in 1871, independently of Maxwell's earlier formulation, and the result is credited to both names jointly.

Boltzmann built statistical mechanics across his career, developing it independently of Gibbs.
