Swedish chemist who built the ultracentrifuge in the 1920s, extending the centrifuge principle to far higher speeds than any device before it; his first version, completed in 1924, reached about 5,000 times the force of gravity, and a 1925 to 26 version reached roughly 100,000 times gravity. He used it to measure the molecular weights of proteins and other large colloidal particles directly for the first time, work for which he received the 1926 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
