Thomas Gold was an Austrian-born astrophysicist who, with Hermann Bondi and separately with Fred Hoyle, proposed the steady-state theory of the universe in 1948, holding that the universe has no beginning and maintains constant average density through the continuous creation of new matter as it expands. He later made influential, sometimes contested, contributions on pulsars, the inner ear and the deep hot biosphere hypothesis for the origin of hydrocarbons.
