Wilhelm Wundt was a German physician, physiologist and philosopher who in 1879 opened the first laboratory anywhere devoted exclusively to psychological research, at the University of Leipzig, an event widely treated as marking psychology's birth as an independent experimental discipline rather than a branch of philosophy. He trained a generation of psychologists from around the world who carried his experimental methods, focused on measuring reaction times, attention and sensation under controlled conditions, back to their home countries, and he is often called the father of experimental psychology.
