The Late Heavy Bombardment, or lunar cataclysm, is a hypothesized astronomical event thought to have occurred approximately 4.1 to 3.8 billion years ago, during which a disproportionately large number of asteroids and comets are thought to have collided with the terrestrial planets and their moons in the inner Solar System.
