The mole is the SI base unit of amount of substance, used to count discrete entities such as atoms, molecules, or ions in a sample. It bridges microscopic particle counts and macroscopic, measurable quantities of matter.

The 14th CGPM adopted the mole as the seventh SI base unit in 1971; its definition was updated in 2019 by fixing the numerical value of the Avogadro constant.
