The newton is the SI derived unit of force, defined as the force needed to accelerate a mass of one kilogram at one metre per second squared. It is named after Isaac Newton for his work on classical mechanics.

The underlying unit of force was defined by CIPM Resolution 2 in 1946; the name newton and symbol N were formally adopted by the 9th CGPM's Resolution 7 in 1948.
