The Curie Institute in Paris traces its founding to 1909, when Marie Curie oversaw the creation of the Institut du Radium, a joint venture of the Institut Pasteur and the University of Paris pairing a physics and chemistry laboratory under Curie herself with a biological and medical research laboratory under the physician Claudius Regaud. Construction on rue d'Ulm finished in 1914. In 1921 Curie and Regaud established the Fondation Curie, recognised as a public-interest institution, to fund and expand the work into cancer treatment as well as research; the Radium Institute and the Curie Foundation merged in 1970 into the single Institut Curie that operates today, a private, non-profit foundation combining research, teaching, and a hospital treating cancer patients. Ten Nobel laureates have worked there over its history, including Marie Curie herself and her daughter Irene Joliot-Curie, who shared the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with her husband Frederic Joliot-Curie for the discovery of artificial radioactivity.
