Swiss-American physicist who in 1946 at Stanford University independently developed a method, nuclear induction, for detecting nuclear magnetic resonance in bulk matter rather than in molecular beams. He shared the 1952 Nobel Prize in Physics with Edward Purcell, and his method became one of the two founding techniques of the NMR spectrometer.
