Leonard Bloomfield was born on 1 April 1887 in Chicago and died on 18 April 1949 in New Haven, Connecticut. He taught at the University of Chicago from 1927 to 1940 and then at Yale University, and in 1924 he helped found the Linguistic Society of America, later serving as its president in 1935. His 1933 textbook Language set out a rigorous method for describing a language's sound system and grammar strictly from observable evidence, and it dominated the training of American linguists for a generation, giving its name to the Bloomfieldian school of structural linguistics that Noam Chomsky's generative grammar later challenged.
