Sir Michael Stanley Whittingham (born 22 December 1941) is a British-American chemist, professor of chemistry and director of the Institute for Materials Research at Binghamton University. He discovered intercalation electrodes and invented the first rechargeable lithium metal battery, work that led to his sharing the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with John B. Goodenough and Akira Yoshino.
